is located about 10 miles north of Ellinwood. It has 41,000 acres in a natural basin 90 feet lower than the Arkansas River. Over 300 different bird species can be viewed there to include the whooping crane and bald eagle. It was originally a Cheyenne Indian hunting ground.
The Kansas Wetlands Education Center at Cheyenne Bottoms
is located about 15 minutes north of Ellinwood. The newly constructed 11,250 square foot center is a branch of Fort Hays State University's Stenberg Museum. They have educational exhibits to describe the role wetlands play. The location is the southeast portion of Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area along Kansas Higway 156. The hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Quivira National Wildlife Refuge:
Quivira National Wildlife Refuge is comprised of prairie grasses, salt marshes, sand dunes, canals, dikes, and timber. A system of 21 miles of canals and 25 miles of dikes provides nearly 6,000 acres of managed wetlands and marshes. During spring migration Quivira National Wildlife Refuge becomes a staging area for 500,000 birds. There are nature trails, an auto tour, photography blinds and a visitor center.
